on the northeast. snow and sleet have produced treacherous road conditions from pennsylvania and western new york to maine with more than a foot of snow expected in some areas. this storm so far being blamed for at least six deaths. and as nbc's kurt gregory reports, the storm is creating a post holiday travel nightmare. >> reporter: cleanup on the day after christmas for the deep south. a record of more than 20 tornadoes as a massive storm system ripped through mississippi and alabama and left arkansas with a record-breaking white christmas. that storm system continued its march across the center of the nation wednesday, leaving a near whiteout from detroit -- >> not used to it. it's slick. >> reporter: -- to indianapolis. >> it's definitely a doozy out there. >> reporter: the blizzard-like conditions making getting anywhere nearly impossible, on the ground and in the skies. thousands of passengers were stranded in dallas, where temperatures stayed below freezing, forcing airlines to deice their planes. the storm has caused more than 1,300 cancellations nationwide on one of the busiest travel da

the country are facing major cancellations from san diego to new york with the worst cancellations coming out of chicago. our nbc meteorologist bill karins is tracking the storm for us. what's the latest? >> today was a good day to take off from work if you possibly could. in a lot of areas from the great lakes to the west coast, the wind is howling. the wind is the biggest threat out there. it's going to be this morning in mostly the big cities along i-95. right now winds 39 in philadelphia. 36 in scranton. you have to get in the 50-mile-per-hour range to get damaging winds. that will occur as the sun is coming up this morning around new york city, philadelphia, all of new jersey and then southern new england this afternoon. it's not pretty around chicago with winds at 40 and indianapolis at 40 and areas of snow out here. so it's a very windy day out there. not good for flying. a lot of airline delays. as far as the rain goes, the rain is in green, remember. heavy rain kicking up from philadelphia to new york city through the hudson valley, through scranton and binghamton, new york. that wil

are expected today in the disturbing death of a man who was pushed right in front of the path of a new york subway train monday and why investigators are questioning a suspect they believe got into an altercation with the victim before pushing him. kirk gregory has the story. >> reporter: it's a horrifying death that has many new york city subway riders in shock. >> the victim here was caught between a train and the station and expired on the scene. >> reporter: police say 58-year-old kesu kahn was shoved in to the path of and oncoming train and was struck and killed. the driver of the train was so distraught, he had to be taken away in a wheelchair. tuesday, police apprehended a suspect for questioning. they believe he's the man seen in a heated argument with the victim on the subway platform before the violent confrontation. to identify the suspect, detectives poured over security video from area stores and took him into custody near the scene of the crime. meanwhile, haun's family and neighbors are grieving. >> feel bad to myself and to the family, you know. it is a tragedy. >> reporter:
